Sergio Rufo, Esq.

Honolulu, HI

Like the song says, Sergio was “Born and raised in SOUTH Detroit,” which is really Windsor, Ontario, Canada. His father worked in a car parts factory and his mother in various Italian restaurants. His family’s work ethic is the underpinning for everything, as he admits to not being the sharpest knife in the drawer. His grandfather, who left his home at 11 years old to make roads by hand (only for his parents to walk 8 hours on Saturday and take his meager salary and walk 8 hours home on Sunday) would say “go to work with a tie and a briefcase, not a hat and a lunch box.”

When he was young, he wanted to be Magic Johnson. Then Pat Riley. Then Magnum P.I. Then he developed 3 dreams – live on a tropical island, drive a Ferrari and have Wednesdays off. He has one out of three and suspects he is done, but he is still working on the other two. After watching My Cousin Vinny he went to law school in both Windsor and Detroit at the same time to obtain an American and a Canadian law degree. He then moved to Guam sight unseen and did insurance/medmal defense. After a stint in Jamaica, he moved to Honolulu, where he was still stuck doing defense work. After a few years, he said screw this and started his own firm, with the support of many local Plaintiff attorneys. He had three jury trials in 12 months and his practice evolved to where now he only takes a handful of medmal/death cases and works them up for trial. He rarely misses a chance to attend fun and educational conferences where he can further develop his still raw trial skills by learning from the best in the country.

In his spare time, he enjoys playing hockey at the Ice Palace, Lawyer’s League softball and basketball and playing bartender and karaoke MC at parties.
